apperance;;
Despite his advancing years, time’s ravages have had very little effect on Tobias; he remains much the same as he was twenty years previously, only perhaps slightly more stiff and weary. 6’3” in height and modestly muscled – he has ever been one for exercise and healthy living, although not to the extremes others may take it – he does not look to be a man of sixty-two. He has something of an ageless quality to him, which is most obviously apparent in his face: wrinkles are shallow and very hard to discern despite decades of frowning and, rather than recede, his hairline only appears to have grown: whilst his hair is now an iron-grey, it has only gotten longer as he has aged, to the point that he often ties it back in a ponytail. Cutting it is pointless; he’ll likely be dead soon, and it’ll only grow back anyway. Probably longer than before. Tobias has a face that could have been carved from granite, however; darkened lips that have long since forgotten how to curve upwards in a smile, and a sharply pointed nose; he is constructed entirely of planes and angles, which only adds to his foreboding appearance.
Many of Tobias’ problems are internal: he has acute arthritis, has had a single kidney removed which has begun to cause complications, and is unable to walk without a cane to support him sometimes, particularly in the colder months. Winter is Tobias’ biggest bane, as it prompts him to realise just how old he actually is; he has a weak immune system, and is highly susceptible to more virulent strains of flu as a result.
Tobias’ clothing is as reserved as his personality: a plain white shirt, a comfortable pair of black or grey business trousers, and some practical shoes; either laced business shoes, or walking boots. Nothing flashy, or showy, or even remotely interesting; Tobias’ style of dress can only be called drab. In the winter months, he is always supporting himself with a cane, although he does not stoop even with the arthritis.
personality;; Tobias is cold and remote, with no sense of humour whatsoever. He hasn’t smiled since his wife died, and does not even acknowledge attempts to break through the wall he has pulled up around himself. That is a wall firmly established that not even his daughters can break down…although they can soften him somewhat. Tobias is an extremely foreboding and intimidating man, although he places immense value on family ties, and he is not incapable of affection; he loves his daughters dearly, although he has begun the process of distancing himself from both of them: they are both fully grown, and need to accept that, someday soon, he is going to pass away.
Tobias is not the type of man who inspires friendship or even companionship. He is a man who stands apart from the rest of humanity, and will remain as such until the day that he dies…which he hopes will come soon, for he has lived far too long already. Something of a nihilist in his way of thinking, much of what made Tobias human drained out of him with the death of his wife some thirty years previously, and he is a very depressing man to be around. He is not particularly melancholy, yet he has a perpetual aura of sadness that is difficult to ignore, and one will get the feeling that talking to him is futile…which, indeed it is. Whilst he has a great deal of knowledge to impart, being experienced and worldly, much of what Tobias says is tainted by loss. A broken man? Perhaps. Although it would be a mistake to assume that his mind has dulled as a result of it; he remains as sharp as ever.
Tobias has a quiet, yet powerful voice, being one that demands immediate attention. He has a cold sort of charisma, and his withdrawn persona exudes a powerful aura of mystery, making him a lodestone for the curious and the ambitious. He is an object of interest to most he meets, for he takes in everything and reveals seemingly nothing in exchange, for he refuses to speak of his past…after all, it isn’t relevant anymore. Tobias does not believe in living in the past, or even looking to the future: the present moment is all that matters, and the present is filled with nothing but futility.

history;;
Tobias was born into a wealthy family. His mother died shortly after having him, and his father was a changed man after this, treating Tobias coldly for the majority of his childhood, instructing him in the ways of business; he was an heir, nothing more. As a child, Tobias had no friends, no time for play, and nothing remotely resembling a childhood, as his every waking hour was occupied by studies and, later, employment. Despite his father’s forbidding it, he ran away from home at the age of ten and acquired a starter Pokémon, Piplup, and began a journey of his own as a trainer.
Tobias travelled around for the next three years, collecting Gym Badges and Pokémon, dodging his father’s agents, finally making his way to the Pokémon League and getting to the semi-finals…at which point he was discovered and taken back home before he could compete. He then (reluctantly) resumed his education in the ways of business, under strict guard this time. He was, however, allowed to keep his Pokémon: any added incentive to get him to work was worthwhile.
He met his wife, Lisa, when he was eighteen, when he was at a gala with his father. She recognised him as one of the Pokémon League finalists, and challenged him to a battle, which he easily won…much to the delight of his father – she was the daughter of a significant rival – and to her chagrin. She convinced him to stand up to his father, after hearing his story about why he did not compete in the last rounds of the tournament, however. Tobias severed all ties to his family and left as a result, moving in with Lisa, who became his wife four years later. Not too long after that, the two of them had a daughter, Rose. Neither of their parents approved of this union; it was neither advantageous nor prudent, yet for once in their lives, they had no say in the matter.
For the next ten years, Tobias was a content man. His father reconciled with him upon seeing his new family – eventually; having grandchildren was something he had always wanted - and allowed him to take up a position in the family business, and Tobias had everything he could want or need – a successful career, a loving wife, a daughter he adored, and even a positive relationship with father. However, things swiftly fell apart shortly after Rose’s tenth birthday, when she left to become a Pokémon Trainer. Lisa, who was expecting a second baby at the time, was rushed to hospital as she went into labour, and died shortly after she gave birth to their second daughter due to loss of blood.
Tobias was beside himself was grief, and left even before he had seen his second daughter, staying just long enough to tell the nurse in charge she was to be named Alicia, after Lisa’s mother, and then headed back to his father’s estates, shutting himself away. He remained there for the next five years, until his eldest daughter finally returned – having discovered her mother dead and her little sister put into a care home – and convinced him to take proper care of his family, although he nonetheless remained a broken man.
After his oldest daughter reached the age where she was to become a Pokémon Trainer, she left with her older sister – who had had hers rather rudely interrupted, and had been on the verge of becoming the Champion – Tobias was left alone once again, for the most part. He continued to work for his father, although he was not deemed fit to be a successor after all: changing times meant that bringing in new blood was advantageous, and it did not take a fool to see that he was unfit for anything, having lost his wife, and unable to do much but grieve.
It took Tobias nearly twenty years to stop grieving for his wife, and even now he has yet to regain any sort of sense of humour or optimism; indeed, he no longer cares whether he lives or dies. He devoted himself to travelling, to seeing what he could in his wife’s place, and imparting his knowledge to the next generation…it seemed like the thing to do. What else does one do when one is old and has outlived their usefulness?
