J A E. As much as he wanted to meet his new Pokémon right away, Jae didn't want to stress the poor Totodile out by introducing himself in the middle of a bustling city. No, for the moment it was best if he just kept moving and met the young water-type when they reached Route 1. What would it be like? As much as he hated himself for it, he almost hoped that the Totodile was nothing like his old Charizard. A pang shot through him at the thought. He took a deep breath and quickened his pace a little.
While it had been nice to be among other people again, Jae couldn't help looking forward to the trails ahead. He'd gotten so used to the silence on his previous journey that it would be a nice little reminder of his old life. The young trainer could feel himself growing more and more comfortable as he left Coastal City behind. As soon as small bushes and trees started to crop up on either side of him, Jae stopped and swung his backpack off his shoulders.
His heart pounded in his throat as he unclipped the new Pok? Ball from his belt, and in a flash of brilliant red light, he released his Totodile for the first time. An enormous grin spread across the crocodilian's face, and it waddled towards him and tackled his leg, latching onto his knee while letting loose a terrific raspy cackle. It thrashed its tail wildly, obviously thrilled to have been picked by a trainer.
Jae fell back into a sitting position, beaming at his Totodile. "Well hey there, little guy."
The Totodile growled and snapped furiously at his hand as he reached out to pat its head, and raised an eyebrow. The boy trainer cocked his head to the side curiously. "Hey, what's up with yo--OHH...You're a...girl Totodile?" Jae wrinkled his nose slightly. He couldn't say he'd been expecting a female starter. Not that he was against girls or anything. He'd just always imagined his first Pokémon partner to be...well...a guy.
"Well it's uh, it's nice to meet you. I'm Jae." He stuck out a hand and shook the Totodile's claw. She nodded eagerly before waddling off down the path, rasping to herself as she explored the route on her own.
Jae snatched up his bag and slung it over his shoulder before hurrying after his Pokémon. "Hey, wait a sec! I don't have a name for you yet." The Totodile hurried away from him, still babbling away. Jae ran his fingers through his orange hair in frustration. "Okay uhhh...how about Bella?"
The water-type turned and gave him a pointed look. Jae chuckled. "Okay not that then...what about...Nike? I think she was like...the goddess of victory or something?" The Totodile shook her head. "What about...Margo?"
At that, the crocodilian's eyes lit up and she latched onto his leg as he kept walking. "Alright then, you're stuck with Margo," Jae chuckled.

zigzagoon, female, level four. moves: tackle, growl, tailwhip ability: pick-up
She was having a bad day. In fact, she was having a very bad day. The poor zigzagoon was feeling just awful. Her brother had finally split up with her to 'live his own life', he said. But she was lonely. In fact, she was very lonely. And for that matter, a rascal of a rattata had stolen her berry stash from right under her nose! The striped Pokémon thrashed her tail in annoyance as she surveyed her horizons. There was nothing much for her to do besides explore. But the little female didn't want to explore. She was too irritated. The zigzagoon leaped over a bush and onto a path. Twisting her head about, she spotted a trainer and a Pokémon. Great! Just what she needed! And they had probably seen her too. No doubt was the trainer going to use her to level up his Pokémon. "Oh well. I suppose I'll just jump on ahead and get ready." Reluctantly, the Pokémon leaped forward, teeth barred and fur bristling.
Zigzagoon wants to battle!

J A E. The bushes rustled off to Jae's left and he took a step back, just in time for a Zigzagoon to charge out of the undergrowth and land on the path in front of him. She growled menacingly and crouched low to the ground, the fur on the back of her neck bristling as she lashed her tail from side to side. Margo dug her claws into Jae's leg and he yelped. "Hey! Come on, Margo -- go get it! Leer and Scratch!"
The Totodile flashed her fangs at the little raccoon Pok?mon and advanced on it. She stopped a few feet in front of it and glared at it. There didn't seem to be much of an effect, so she widened her eyes, hoping that there would be some sign that the Zigzagoon was feeling its defenses drop a little. Margo's eye twitched slightly and her eyes began to water.
"Okay that's enough, Mar," Jae winced. "Now just try to scratch it with your claws, okay?"
Margo let out a high-pitched, raspy roar and charged the wild Pok?mon. Lifting one of her claws, she attempted to bring it slashing down across the Zigzagoon's back.
[Thanks for taking the thread <3]

zigzagoon, female, level four. moves: tackle, growl, tailwhip ability: pick-up
Oh, great. He had a Totodile. The little Zigzagoon suddenly felt rueful that she even made her presence known. She puffed herself out to make herself look bigger, but the Pok?mon advanced forward, leering at her. She took a step back, feeling her defenses drop. She should have just ignored it. The raccoon Pok?mon began to growl menacingly. But the Totodile came on strong, leaping up for an attack. The Zigzagoon opened her mouth to cry out but she came down on her back with a slash. But the Zigzagsoon took the moment by the horns and rushed to tackle and pin down the Totodile. She wasn't sure how this was going to work. The poor little female hadn't battled much before, besides little mock trainings against her brother.

J A E. Margo wasn't expecting the Zigzagoon to retaliate so quickly, so the raccoon slammed into her gut and hurled her a few feet backwards across the field. The Totodile skidded across the path before coming to a stop. A little shaken, she managed to roll to the side and get back to her feet.
The crocodilian glared across the field at her opponent, panting heavily. She hadn't had any previous battling experience, so this was taking a lot out of her.
Jae chewed on his lip, frustrated that Margo didn't have more than two moves right now. He was so used to dealing with powerful moves and complicated strategies that he almost wasn't sure how to deal with beginner battles anymore. "Come on, you've got this! Try to be quick on your feet and don't stay in one place too long," the young trainer called out.
If they wanted to get anywhere in Vermella, Margo was definitely going to have to work on her speed. Stamina would come with time.
The young Totodile nodded, still studying her opponent. Then, hoping to catch it off0guard, Margo raced towards the Zigzagoon again, her claw drawn back to attempt a swipe at the raccoon's side this time.
